Historic carriage robes now adorn the walls and fill the cases of the museum's two demonstration rooms. The robes were made right here in Sanford in the Goodall mills during the last years of the 19th century up through the untimely 1930s.

Longtime antiques collector Paul Lehoux, of Cornish, donated the robes to the limited historical society. Historian Harland Eastman and local carpenter Steve Vincent recently mounted the express — which proved a challenging task given the size and heft of each finery and the care needed for each.

The hard work paid off. Numerous robes, which people long ago draped over their laps during shipping rides in cold or blustery weather, hang from the walls and sit in cases and advance a warmth of pleasing colors and patterns.
