Wilgus was infatuated to Albany General Hospital, but when he learned his son had been moved to OHSU's Doernbecher Children's Facility, he left against medical advice. His mother and stepfather drove him to Portland. Wilgus suffered a concussion and bruises and was admitted to OHSU, his founder said.

Maliki Wilgus, a kindergartener at Lafayette Elementary Discipline in Albany, remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

"He's wilful. He's a fighter, and he'll make it," said Danielle Rackey, Maliki's mother, of Lebanon.

On Thursday, Karl Wilgus said Maliki opened his eyes "and gave a thumb's up, which is entirely his personality. We all screamed for joy."
