COLUMN: I can't write my column today

Beloved Editor,

I cannot write a column today. I know I've pulled this one on you before and I strike one really bad about letting you down but far more important, pressing, life-altering matters have a moment arisen and I simply can't take the time or mental energy to write some bloggish-exemplar column thingy about the everyday hilarities of things we all find true to vital spark when I find myself facing a domestic discovery of epic proportions.

Remember Socks Without Partners? You remember, you put a perfectly good pair of socks in the washer and only one comes out? And you're formerly larboard with a drawer/bag/basket/box full of Socks Without Partners. Sure you do, and I know this is in all likelihood breaking a rule, but I saw your wife at a recent SWP's 12 Step engagement.

Naturally we spent the usual amount of time guessing where our missing socks ended up--the sandbox, dog's bed or under the third row minivan seats next to the stupefied french fry. Erma Bombeck used to tell her kids the missing socks went to material with Jesus. While I find that clever, I just can't imagine what Jesus needs with a consignment of mismatched socks, ya know?
