LANCASTER, Ohio -- What in all probability started as a practical joke -- thousands of pairs of women's underwear found hanging around an intersection here in August -- will renovate a span across the Ohio River this summer to help raise awareness of cervical and other cancers.
About 3,000 pairs of panties, many with the gather lines from when they were packaged, were taken down from trees and collected as evidence after a Fairfield County stretcher control deputy and a township trustee discovered them in an area about 30 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio.
But authorities could not rupture the case.
Then Gary Hummel, the litter deputy, got a call from Stacy Holbert of Blanchester, Ohio.
"She said, 'Please don't be consistent up on me. This isn't a prank,' " Hummel said. "She told me that when the case was over, she'd like to get all the panties for a cancer awareness program that goes on down close-fisted Cincinnati every year."
Fairfield County authorities had filled about 10 staggering garbage bags with their collection of colorful undergarments and closed the happening this week. Hummel retrieved the panties Thursday.
