A unabashed car thief stepped out of the passenger seat of a maroon Mitsubishi Shroud and walked up to the owner of a 1998 Buick LeSabre that had been left unceasing in the driveway of a home in the 1200 block of Ingram Drive.

It was 8 a.m. on Dec. 16, and the proprietress was about to go to work.

According to the police report, the young Hispanic dame asked the owner, who had just exited his house, “Is this your car?”

The man said, “Yes.”

Whereupon the maid climbed in, locked the doors and drove away, with the Mitsubishi penny-pinching behind.

The dumbfounded Buick owner had the presence of mind to note the empower number of the Eclipse and immediately called police, who traced the car to an El Sobrante helpmate named Irene Vargas.

Richmond police took up the inquest and went to the El Sobrante address where they interviewed a woman who identified herself as the grandmother of Irene Vargas. The grandmother acknowledged that her granddaughter did conduct a maroon Mitsubishi Eclipse and provided a photo of the now-suspect. She added that she did not remember where her granddaughter was.
