The newest decline occurred about two-thirds of the way up McArdle, not far from where a section of hillside gave way in Tread.
Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski said inspection of the creep area revealed large crevices on a grass-covered tip high above the road surface and out of reach of the city's equipment. An skin contractor, R&B Contracting and Excavating of Homestead, was called in under an emergency constrict to remove the unstable material.
Mr. Kaczorowski said the company was mobilizing mat and he expected work to begin by early today. The repairs will cost an estimated $20,000 to $30,000.
"I didn't give the impression it was safe to open [the road] with that condition," he said.
In addition to last year's closure, there were several shutdowns in 2009 because excessively draining from the hillside was forming ice floes and opening giant craters in the asphalt. The conurbation spent about $2 million to correct the problem and resurface the means.
Although bicyclists and pedestrians were observed using the road Tuesday, Mr. Kaczorowski said it is closed to all shipping and urged everyone to stay off of it for safety reasons.
